Configurable 5B module?

Tech Note

Over 20 plus years, many of you have become familiar with "5B" signal conditioning modules. These small, solidly-potted, "bricks" have been used in thousands of applications to interface different types of sensors to many different types of data acquisition systems.

The beauty of the "5B" has been in its small size, rugged high- performance and its ability to connect almost any sensor to almost any system! Each module is designed for a specific task... to interface a given thermocouple, a given load cell, a tachometer, voltage, current, etc. to your system. Also, many of you have had us create custom modules to better fit your applications. What if you could change or reconfigure a "5B" module to better suit your task? The world's first configurable "5B" is now here...

Dataforth engineering has created the configurable SCM5B48-01 Accelerometer Module. Maintaining the small, solidly potted form-factor, the "5B48" allows you to select AC or DC coupling, excitation current, signal gain, and high-pass filter and low-pass cutoff frequencies through a set of miniature slide switches that are designed into the bottom of the module!

The SCM5B48 provides excitation to piezoelectric (accelerometer) sensors with built-in microelectronic amplifiers, commonly known as ICP, IEPE or LIVM sensors. The module provides a constant current excitation to the sensor, then isolates, filters, and amplifies the sensor output, yielding a high-level analog voltage output.
