Thermocouples

Tech Note

In our application note Introduction to Thermocouples, we explore the history of the thermocouple from its origins in the 1820s right up to its modern usage today! In a short 3 pages, we present why thermocouples work the way they do, why you need signal conditioners to provide a high input impedance circuit to measure a thermocouple's voltage, how and why to provide 'cold junction compensation', and a description of linearization as well as other important measurement requirements. Part 1 is a quick summary of over 170 years of thermocouple temperature measurement technology!

In our application note Practical Thermocouple Temperature Measurements, we will look at some modern thermocouple specs. For example, you will see how linearity is effected by TC metallurgy, how mathematical models are used to plot response characteristics, how cold-junction-compensation is applied, and why linearization performed in the signal conditioner can be the best solution! Also, we provide an excellent checklist of 15 "reminders" to use on your next thermocouple application!
